GETTING STARTED IN AMATEUR RADIO

If you enjoy using radio to communicate, get started now on earning your  FCC Amateur Radio license.  You can have fun operating mobile, experimenting with antennas, designing an effective station, talking with others and meeting new friends.  Also, you can assist your neighbors and community by providing public service communications, especially when normal communications and utilities are disrupted.

To earn your entry-level (Technician) license, you must score 75% or higher on a 35-question multiple-choice exam.  Exam opportunities are offered at Regency Mall every three months.

For more on getting started in Amateur Radio, access http://www.arrl.org/hamradio.html

Formal classes are available in the northeast Florida, usually during fall and winter.  Attend the next NOFARS meeting for details on classes being organized.

The question pool can be downloaded free of charge from  the FCC web site.  Look for the Element 2 Amateur Radio Question Pool.

Free Internet exam study guides also are helpful.  One site that has these is http://kb6nu.com/tech-manual/

A better option is to buy a more detailed study guide which contains explanatory material in addition to the questions.  Guides can be ordered through the American Radio Relay League web site or through the www.w5yi.com web site.  The ARRL book
Now You're Talking
is a good choice as is the W5YI
Technician Class Study Manual.
